How many times have you said something that just didn’t come out the way you wanted it to? How many times have we said something that we really didn’t mean, but we were too frustrated to stop it from being said? One of the hardest things to do when you’re communicating with someone is how you express yourself. All people are unique and different in their own way and they have to be able to show the world what is the one thing that makes them special. You are an amazing person. You have some unique thoughts, perceptions, and ways of doing things, and you can teach and influence other people with the unique knowledge that you have. But, you have to actively get out there and find ways to do that. Luckily, we have discovered some great practical and creative ways that you can use to express yourself and most of them can also be a lot of fun!
1. Don’t Fear People’s Judgment:
Social anxiety is not a disease. It is a spiritual state of mind that is the direct result of fear. Your imagination will create far worse scenarios than what most people will ever think. Don’t fear what other people think about you. Try this, “I’m having a hard time expressing myself, and I thought maybe you could help me.” Hardly anyone will be critical of you when you’ve asked for their help. It’s a great tool to overcoming your fear of other people’s judgment.
2. When You’re Upset, Write A Letter:
If you’re furious at someone, go ahead and write them a nasty letter. Just don’t give it to them. Sleep on it. Next morning go through the letter, your perspectives have shifted now and I seriously doubt you’ll send the letter under those conditions. But more than that, sending someone a letter that is well thought out is a great idea when you’re trying to express yourself. Sometimes a well worded letter will allow you to express yourself where a conversation would not.
3. Express Through Art:
Use shapes, colors and images to reflect how you feel. Our minds have different ways of perceiving things so colors and shapes hold different meanings for us too. Throw paint on a canvas, use different brush strokes to create different shapes and textures, be free and let the painting speak your feelings. Use your body movement, rhythm and music to express yourself. Write a song, sing a song, improvise different sounds and melodies that reflect your current state.
4. Get Closer To Nature:
It is a known fact that nature has healing powers. Some people say that one can only be one’s self if they are in nature. Nature brings out the best in people, allowing them to harness their true self. If you don’t have the possibility to spend time in nature, you just have to surround yourself by nature. You should have plants in your room or your office.
5. Start Writing A Blog:
Blogging gives you to the freedom to do what you want and say what you want, while connecting with an audience. You can pretty much do anything you want on a blog, and it can be read by anyone in the world, which is why it is a great way to express yourself to a large group of people. You can also share your posts on social media to get them in front of other people or you can just make your blogs anonymous and still express yourself. But whatever you do, make sure you stay active off your blog in order to keep your name in front of other people and encourage them to come visit your blog.
6. Dress According To Your Personality:
As John Malkovich said, “Fashion is chaotic, and it can be an aggravation, too, but it is at its best when it allows you to express yourself.” The great thing is that you pass hundreds of people a day, and through your dress, and what it conveys, you can affect them in some way. In short, dressing in a way that matches you will help you influence people silently. You will influence other people to be themselves.
7. Participate In Extracurricular Activities:
In school, it was mandatory to participate in some extracurricular activities, but as an adult, if there is a choice, many of us won’t do it, which is too bad because it is one of the greatest ways to express yourself to anyone. There are so many different activities to choose from, and they all have the potential to give you an outlet to express yourself and will contribute to who you are as a person.
8. Do A Lot Of Reading:
Reading will help you learn how other people express themselves. Pay attention to word usage, diction, flow, voice and tone. These will give you ideas on expressing yourself. They’ll provide you with many and myriad ways of expressing your emotions. A wise man once said, not every reader is a leader, but every leader is a reader.
9. Make A Brainstorm Of Your Feelings:
Often we find it difficult to express our emotions because we don’t quite understand exactly what we are feeling and why. Brainstorming your feelings will help to surface and create a fuller picture of your different feelings. This will help you to feel more able to express them or talk about them with others.
10. Exaggerate Your Feelings!
Exaggerating your feelings will help you to let it all out! Make them appear bigger in your mind. By exaggerating your feelings, you will be more able to vent your feelings without holding back. Often when we don’t understand our feelings completely, we feel reluctant to express them fully. Now that you have new ways to express yourself, you can finally let it all out! Express yourself, be creative and have fun while doing it.
11. Be Mature When You Express Yourself:
Here is a rule of thumb; if they are willing to talk about others behind their back, they will do it to you too. Let’s stay away from the unproductive gossip. Think about it, when is the last time you actually made a situation better by swearing at someone? Maturity in conversation is thoughtfulness, consideration, and the willingness to listen. Show respect to others and they will respect you.
