Haunted Attractions in South Carolina

What’s better than a spooky adventure to get your adrenaline pumping? Whether it’s Halloween season or not, everyone likes a great scare once in a while. Next time you’re visiting South Carolina, you need to check out some of the most haunted sites that this state has to offer. Here are a few of the best places in South Carolina to spark your paranormal senses.

Oakwood Cemetery

Also known as “Hell’s Gate,” this spooky cemetery has an unusual relationship with technology, so it’s best to leave your cell phone in the car when visiting. It’s not uncommon to have some creepy tech-related occurrences while wandering through Spartanburg’s oldest cemetery. You just charged your phone on the car ride over – so why is your battery mysteriously dead? Your friend’s phone, on the other hand, won’t stop ringing, but no one is there. Could it be a ghostly being from another dimension? The only way to find out is to make the visit for yourself and see what all the fuss is about.

The South Carolina Lunatic Asylum

Everyone knows that some of the most haunted places in the world are old asylums, and the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum is no different. The types of torture – also known as “treatment” – that patients underwent in the 1800s and 1900s are absolutely barbaric, so it’s no wonder the spirits of the deceased continue to roam the property. Now known as the South Carolina State Hospital, it is currently under renovations to become a mixed-use downtown area, including shops and apartments, known as the BullStreet District.

The Old Charleston Jail

Another location that’s often a hub of paranormal activity is jails. Many prisoners die while incarcerated, and the Old Charleston Jail is home to many souls with unfinished business, including Lavinia Fisher. Fisher is known as the first publicized female serial killer in history, and her ghost is said to haunt the grounds of the jail to this day after her hanging and burial on the jail’s property. Not only are spirits of convicted murderers said to roam the grounds, but the spirits of wrongfully convicted individuals as well.

Dock Street Theatre

Another haunted location in the city of Charleston is the Dock Street Theatre, which was a hotel at one time. On your visit, you’ll probably run into the ghost of the “Lady in Red,” who is said to have been killed as lightning struck her on the balcony of her hotel room. Another spector you may see is that of an actor, who is said to be so dedicated to his craft that he refuses to leave the stage. If you’re looking for some more excitement in your everyday life, you may want to look for Charleston houses for sale so you can experience these otherworldly encounters on the regular.
