Have you ever thought of shipping containers being used for something other than storing or shipping things? It means you might have never thought of shipping container in a desert being used to form a living space for humans. This is an unusual innovative idea by James Whitaker the London Based designer, to use containers and turn them into a fully functional unique house with aesthetic qualities as well.

The house is a 200 square meter space and it has one fully functional kitchen, one living room along with three bedrooms. The house is built up by joining multiple containers at different angles, which turn out to look like a white flower blooming in barren desert and makes it standout along the plains of sand. It was designed for a film producer who is not named. He had a talent of handling such creative projects which can easily be seen in the structural placement of the house.

The idea was given to James by a female friend who showed him his older project which was never executed.“Earlier this year my client in LA had some friends visiting and, having a little time to spare, they all went on a road trip to visit the client’s plot of land in Joshua Tree,” said James. One of the friends said, “you know what would look great here? before opening her laptop to show everyone a picture she’d seen on the internet. The picture was of an office that I’d designed several years ago but had never been built, so the next time the client was in London he got in touch and asked to meet up.”

This house is known as The Joshua Tree Residence and it is going to be built on the 90 acre plot owned by his client in California. The construction is going to start next year (2018). After completion it will include solar panels on garage roof along with beautiful views outside every window and wood deck. The design using shipping containers compiled together was once an idea proposed for an office in Germany and now it is being built as a space to live in Californian desert. By the help of photo realistic rendering you can see the proposed idea for the home in form of white shipping containers cluster blooming in the rocky desert.

The house is being specifically designed for Los Angeles based film producer and his wife and James took the commission after visiting the site 3 hours away from LA.

The film producer hires  James Whitaker for creating his holiday home on the sloped barren rocky land situated three hours away from LA in a gully which was created over the years by storm water. Whitaker’s idea was to have a bright white painted exoskeleton of shipping containers which would look like a starburst with the cubes angled in all directions. The house will be supported and lifted by the help of concrete columns.

Each container is angled in such a way that it will give a wide view of landscape around the site or to make a space completely private depending on the usage of space. The interior rendering shows white walls along with concrete flooring. The overall theme is minimalistic with plywood furniture and Misfit Seating designed by Ron Arad as Whitaker used to work for Arad’s London studio

The house is designed to connect the residents with the sunny rocky landscape while providing them with a sense of security and privacy. The square windows give perfect view of the beautiful blue sky and surrounding terrain. The faceted ceiling in some areas make it feel like being in a crystalline form.

Along the house is a garage with solar panels which are supposed to be a source of electricity generation for the house. It also has a big wooden deck giving perfect view of the surrounding. James Whitaker says “The client was keen for a hot tub to be included, and so we configured the outdoor space to have a degree of privacy and be sheltered from the desert winds”.
